To celebrate the end of a full and successful summer, our team held a Harvest Festival at the Wesley Colbert Zion Street Community Garden. We invited friends and neighbors to come to the garden and enjoy our Farm Stand and activities for kids. Everyone in the program contributing the planning different aspects of the event.
Each garden team made poster boards describing the work they accomplished this summer to display in the garden, including pictures from each site.
The Kids’ Activities team put together a zucchini racing booth and a bobbing for apples booth. They also organized a garden scavenger hunt for the kids.
Dylan worked with kids to construct and race zucchini and corn soap box cars. We decorated them with wire ears (and sometimes tails).
One of our participants, Liz, taught us how to make natural dyes earlier in the summer. She used the dyes to make a natural face-painting table.
After all the kids got their faces painted (some a few times), they turned the tables on our artists!
The Entertainment team invited local musicians to perform at the festival.
After they sang their set, it turned into an open mic, where some of our guests and many kids sang their hearts out!
We were entertained by break dancing by Dat, Rushion, and Liz, which evolved into everyone dancing!
The Food team put together a Farm Stand and developed a menu based on ingredients we grew in the garden and foods we learned to cook in workshops this summer.
We picked ingredients that morning to sell at our farm stand and cooked all day to prepare fresh bread, pesto pasta, zucchini bread, salad, cookies, pickles and spaghetti!
It was a beautiful night to celebrate the beginning of the harvest with our neighbors. We can’t wait to do it again next year!
