As we are rapidly approaching the thick of the 2012 growing season and the beginning of our summer program start date, April is a very exciting month for all of us.
Thanks to our national network of supporters, Summer of Solutions Hartford secured $10,000 from the Connecticut Health Foundation. We would also like to thank the Hampshire Foundation, the New England Grassroots Environmental Fund, Miss Porter’s School and a large number of individual donors who have committed to supporting our work in 2012. With all of their help,we are very confident that this coming season will be fruitful.
Last week we held our kick-off meeting and first community work day at the Zion Street Garden. We’d like to thank all of our friends and family who came to help us mow the grass, turn the garden beds, and pick up trash. Many of the Zion Street. Garden members from last summer returned to help us and to begin planting seeds and seedlings in their plots. We are also preparing to build and install 40 or more new raised wooden beds in the space that is still available at the Zion Street Garden plots, which will soon be full. This coming weekend we will be holding two more community work days at the Zion Street Garden to create new raised beds, fill them with soil and begin to plant. We would like to invite all of you to join us on Saturday April 21 and Sunday April 22.
Finally, we have been excited to receive a very strong response from interested applicants to our summer program. We have received nearly 60 applications to join us as Participants in Summer of Solutions 2012. If you are interested in joining our program, you can still apply here. We are really looking forward to working with our returning and new participants this summer.
In addition to expanding the Zion Street Community Garden, we are looking forward to adding new projects to our summer program. We are working with our partners at the Annie Fischer School, Southside Institutions Neighborhood Alliance, the Hartford Dispensary, and Trinity College to develop new projects for the upcoming season.
Again, this is a very exciting time for us. We’ve come a very long way since the program began in 2010, and we’re very thankful to everybody who has helped and supported us along the way. This summer looks to be a wonderful success, and we’d like to invite all of you to join us in whatever capacity you may.
